What We Believe

What We Believe

Our Faith

  • We believe in Jesus, the son of God, whose crucifixion freed us from sin and death
  • We believe God’s grace is freely given to all
  • We believe our faith gives us grace and God’s grace gives us faith
  • We believe we are saved by grace through Jesus’ faith in the path set forward for him by God
  • We believe God’s grace frees us to live gratefully and lovingly and to share that grace with the world

Our Faith in Action

  • We renounce the sins of racism, sexism, ableism, ageism, classism, LGBTQIA+ phobia, intolerance based on religion or on national origin, and all forms of bias and exploitation
  • We commit to building racial equity in our community and the greater world
  • We welcome and include people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions.

Our Wider Faith Community

Trinity is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and is a part of the Virginia Synod within the ELCA. The ELCA was formed in 1987 when three Lutheran churches merged to form one denomination. We are a faith that follows in the footsteps of Martin Luther and other leaders of the Protestant Reformation, seeking to build a foundation upon the belief that we are “saved by grace through faith” (Ephesians 2.8). We are united by one baptism and in full communion partnerships with the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA), Reformed Church in America, United Church of Christ (UCC), Moravian Church in America, the Episcopal Church, and the United Methodist Church. We encourage clergy and laity to share in the common mission we received from Christ, to strive for justice, peace, and equity in the world.
